IMMY

ALAN DENT

Paperback 6" x 9"

ISBN 978-1-913144-72-2   75  pages Published July 2025

Given copies of The Theory of Moral Sentiments and The Wealth of Nations on the day of her birth, Immy leaves them unread, until at sixteen she devours them and inspired by Smith’s assertion of the “principles” in our nature which make us interested in “the fortune of others” and render their happiness necessary to us, she confidently leaves home intent on conquering the world with this doctrine of universal sympathy.

Rebuffed time and again, abused, exploited and reviled, she steadfastly tells those who mock her and assert their belief in material greed that “the pursuit of personal wealth is a delusion” as the renowned Scot wrote.

In this tragi-comic story, predictable response clashes with resilient and innocent high-mindedness, resolved when the forces of debased conformism assert their rights through force.

Charming, amusing and challenging, Immy rescues Smith from those who have misinterpreted him for their self-regarding ends, revivifying the value of classical liberalism shattered on the rocks of nineteenth century “progress”.

"Biting satire - a witty novella updating Voltaire's "Candide" and a terrific moral fable for crazily vicious and decadent times."  -A lexis Lykiard
